Fredericksburg City
The region's historic core. A walkable colonial downtown on the Rappahannock, the University of Mary Washington, and a VRE commuter rail station with Amtrak service to Washington.
Stafford County
The commuter county north of the city, between Fredericksburg and Marine Corps Base Quantico. VRE stations at Brooke and Leeland Road and most of the region's newest subdivisions.
Spotsylvania County
Suburbs and battlefields wrapped around the city's south and west, from the Chancellorsville and Wilderness battlefields to the VRE's southern terminus. Lake Anna sits on the county's southern edge.
King George County
A rural county east along the Rappahannock, anchored by Naval Support Facility Dahlgren and its Potomac River test range. Commutable to Fredericksburg and, over the Harry Nice Bridge, to Southern Maryland.
Caroline County
The region's rural southern flank on the road to Richmond. Bowling Green's courthouse village, Fort Walker (the former Fort A.P. Hill), and rural acreage within reach of both Fredericksburg and Richmond.
